This research paper examines the profound and lasting impact of colonialism on indigenous languages from a historical perspective. It explores how colonial powers systematically suppressed indigenous languages through educational policies, legal frameworks, and cultural assimilation strategies, relegating them to peripheral status. The paper highlights the enduring consequences of language suppression, including cultural identity erosion and ecological disruption within language ecosystems. Despite these challenges, contemporary efforts for language revitalization demonstrate indigenous communities' resilience and determination to reclaim their linguistic heritage. By integrating theories of postcolonialism, linguistic imperialism, language ecology, and cultural resilience, this study contributes to understanding the complexities of colonial legacies on linguistic diversity and informs policies supporting indigenous language preservation.
